| "I think that I shall never see A poem as beautiful as a tree; A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth's sweet-flowing breast; A tree that looks to God all day And lifts its leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain, That intimately lives with rain; Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree." This tree fort built for a lovely family in the Piedmont / Lake Merritt / Grand Lake area of Oakland. Kids Tree FortThis looks like a simple build. Well.. yes and no. Two large oak trunk sections pierce the floor and upper structure complicating the framing of this 8' x 9' treefort. We used quality redwood for the roof rafters and plates, corner posts, window sills and trim, exterior floor joists, and diagonal bracing; pressure treated for the main beam that rides in the crotch of the tree and for the interior floor joists; Pre-primed and painted (by us) exterior grade plywood for the walls, floors, and ceiling/roof; and pre-primed and painted 2xs for the wall framing. The exterior is reed fencing nicely stapled over tar paper. Exposed redwood was stained and sealed. Pre-painting the plywood and pre-staining the redwood before assembly gives a nice crisp edge where, for example, the plywood ceiling abuts the redwood rafters. Normal entry is by a quality rope ladder from underneath up through a hole in the floor. A short hand rail crosses the interior between tree and wall beside the entry hole to forestall accidental falling. For an estimate please EMAIL US before calling, thanks!
